Malawi
Malawi is known as the warm heart of Africa, and with good reason. Enchanting landscapes, the friendliest people on the continent and the striking beauty of Lake Malawi ensure a safari like no other.
Watersports, wildlife and relaxation. Malawi is a land-locked country dominated by Lake Malawi, Africa’s third largest lake. The lake is a huge attraction, being both culturally interesting as well as a fantastic beach destination. The crystal-clear waters are home to a vast number of cichlid fish, and the lake offers excellent swimming, snorkelling, scuba diving, kayaking and sailing opportunities. Whilst there are a number of good spots and beach properties along the length of the western and southern lakeshore, Cape Maclear in the south is arguably the best known and most developed. It is here that some of the best kayaking takes place. Further north, Likoma Island offers a more remote experience. Malawi is not especially known for its big game safaris, but Liwonde National Park and Majete Wildlife Reserve are both re-emerging as credible big game areas. Liwonde National Park is a truly remarkable safari experience and is home to the largest remaining elephant population in the country. Both parks have had big cats re-introduced in recent years and have good concentrations of general game, especially elephants on the Shire River in Liwonde. Both areas are good for birding, especially along the Shire River which flows through both parks.
We recommend combining Lake Malawi with big game safari in Zambia, traveling using light aircraft and perhaps some yoga to stretch out after those long bush drives.
